Did you know that there are 41 cemeteries in Grundy County? Take a tour someday through a few or all of these beautiful cemeteries. Some of the gravestones are truly amazing and are works of art, while others have been completely smoothed by the elements of time and weather. Due to the large Ostfriesen/German population, many of the early gravestones are in German in the northwest part of the county. You will find veterans: 160+ Civil War veterans, at least one Indian Wars veteran, and many, many veterans of the subsequent wars. A few of the unusual inscriptions or gravestones: you will find an elephant trainer and tree stumps in the Fairfield Township cemetery, some beautiful colorized birds in the Grundy Center Rose Hill cemetery, a beautiful cabin by a lake in the Reinbeck cemetery, a U.S. Flag in the Reinbeck-Queen of Heaven Catholic cemetery. There are three mausoleums in the county: one in Grundy Center Rose Hill cemetery, one in Grundy Center Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery, and one in Salem Lutheran cemetery. German township has the most cemeteries with six, while several of the townships have only one.
